Sometimes I look through my old high school yearbooks and wonder whether we were typical for American teenagers back then. I suppose we were, but some of the photos still make me laugh. Smoke holes were common, I guess. Did other schools have Woo-High Clubs? The main potheads were the officers of the Woo-High Club, which even had a Xeroxed membership card. If I remember correctly, the pledge went something like this:
“I, (insert name), as a loyal member of the Soddy-Daisy Woo-High Club, do solemnly swear to uphold the club and to do this we must keep on tokin’.”
The black-and-white images below are from our 1979 yearbook, and the color image is the cover. I’ve always loved the photo of our art teacher, Mr. Coulter, helping Mark with his kite project. Dan Coulter was a Vietnam veteran and a very patient man, no matter how much we tried his patience.
The two color photos beneath the yearbook images are ones I took of classmates in the Smoke Hole. The fat, yellow line in the photo on the left is part of the line which was the perimeter of a big circle people had to be inside of to smoke. I imagine most high schools had smoke holes in the ’70s.
Anyway, those were groovy times.

Soddy-Daisy also had some teenagers who were serious in academics and sports. But, it tickles me that Kathy was the county skeet shooting champion the year of 1979, outshooting all the boys with her amazing skills. So, below is the page for the skeet team in 1979.
What are some of your school memories? I hope you had as much fun as I did!
